
Bokaro. Elephant terror is continuously increasing in Bokaro district of Jharkhand. Three people of the same family were crushed to death by wild elephants at 3.30 am on Wednesday in Karmali Tola of Badkipunnu in Mahuatand police station area of Gumia. The deceased include 65-year-old Gangu Karmali, his wife 62-year-old Kamali Devi and elder sister-in-law 65-year-old Bhagiya Devi.

The elephants also injured Karmi Devi, wife of Ritu Karmali, and Anuja Devi, wife of Pintu Karmali, in the same hamlet. According to the details of the incident, a herd of elephants entered the village and first tried to eat the grains by breaking the door of a house. Meanwhile the elderly couple were sleeping. Kamali Devi was caught in the elephants’ trunks, and Gangu Karmali was captured when he tried to escape. After this, Ganesh Karmali’s wife Bhagiya Devi was also crushed to death in the adjacent house. Ganesh Karmali managed to save his life by running away.
Administrative action and compensation as weapons
After killing the three, the elephants injured women of two more houses and also damaged the houses of Prakash Saav, Krishna Saav and Ganesh Saav in Gangpur village of Mahuatand. The administration immediately reached the spot and provided compensation of Rs 25,000 each to the family members of the deceased and the injured. This incident has become a cause of panic among the local people, and the forest department and administration have started preparations to increase surveillance in the area, so that such accidents can be prevented in future.
