New DelhiThe Supreme Court on Monday dismissed five petitions filed by a lawyer, terming them as ‘incoherent and frivolous’ Public Interest Litigation (PIL). One of these petitions demanded that it be investigated whether onion and garlic contain ‘tamasic’ i.e. negative energy or not. During the hearing, Chief Justice Surya Kant reprimanded lawyer Sachin Gupta and said, do you prepare all these petitions at midnight? The CJI described these petitions as vague, inconsistent and baseless.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi was also included in this bench. He reprimanded the lawyer for filing multiple PILs. Let us tell you that in the petition regarding onion and garlic, it was also said that people of Jain religion consider it as ‘tamasic’ food and do not eat it. On this the CJI asked why do you want to hurt the sentiments of the Jain community?

What argument did the lawyer give? CJI’s strict warning

After the CJI’s rebuke, the lawyer replied that this is a common problem and in Gujarat someone even got divorced for using onion in food. Expressing strong displeasure on this, the CJI said that if next time you bring such an unnecessary petition, you will see what we will do.

Other petition also rejected

Along with this, the Supreme Court also rejected four other PILs filed by Gupta. One of these demanded controlling harmful ingredients in alcohol and tobacco products, the second sought mandatory registration of properties, and the third sought guidelines for the declaration of classical languages. The bench said that the demands in these petitions were vague and there was no legal basis for them. The CJI said that if Gupta had not been a lawyer, he would have imposed exemplary fine on him.
