New Delhi. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday moved a notice in the Rajya Sabha, seeking adjournment of business to discuss the ongoing SIR process in UP. The lower house of Parliament is ready to discuss the issue of electoral reforms. This will include a discussion on the SIR process initiated by the Election Commission of India in several states. Opposition parties have been demanding a debate on the SIR for months, with the Congress alleging discrepancies in the voter list.
According to media reports, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been a vocal critic of SIR and alleges that the government is using the process to remove the names of genuine voters. KC Venugopal is one of the senior Congress leaders to participate in the debate on electoral reforms. Other leaders include Manish Tewari, Varsha Gaikwad, Mohammad Javed, Ujjwal Raman Singh, Isa Khan, Ravi Mallu, Imran Masood, Gowal Padwadi and S Jyotimani.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to initiate the discussion on SIR in the Rajya Sabha. A total of 10 hours have been fixed for complete discussion in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Rahul Gandhi has been consistently critical of the SIR campaign, alleging discrepancies in voter lists and pressure on BLOs. Rahul Gandhi said that SIR is a well thought out move. Where civilians are being harassed and deaths of BLOs are being dismissed as collateral damage due to unnecessary pressure. This is not a failure, but a conspiracy. Democracy has been sacrificed to save those in power.
