
The Supreme Court has expressed serious objection to the content related to judiciary in the NCERT’s Class 8 Social Science book. Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant said that he will not allow anyone to defame the institution of judiciary. He clearly said that the law will take its course and if needed, the court will take suo motu action. At the same time, Justice Bagchi called it against the basic structure. The matter is related to the text in which a part related to corruption in the judiciary has been added. Senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi raised the issue before the court. He said that teaching such material to school children is worrying. On this the CJI said that he has received many calls and messages on this subject and he is fully aware of the matter.
CJI expressed displeasure
CJI Surya Kant said that I will not allow this institution to be defamed. I know how to deal with it.” He indicated that it appeared to be a well-planned and deliberate effort. He said that he does not want to comment much on this right now, but appropriate steps will be taken.
Senior lawyers raised the issue
Kapil Sibal appealed to the court to take suo motu cognizance. Abhishek Manu Singhvi also said that such material can give a wrong message about the judiciary in the minds of students. The CJI thanked both the senior lawyers for bringing the matter to the notice of the court.
What is the root cause of the dispute
Content has been added to a chapter titled “Corruption in the Judiciary” in the NCERT Class 8 Social Science book. Controversy has arisen regarding this part. The Supreme Court has indicated that suo motu cognizance has been taken in this matter. The Supreme Court said that this issue has been taken seriously. The court assured that appropriate and legal steps would be taken. The CJI said that maintaining the dignity and credibility of the judiciary is the top priority.
