After the change of government in Bangladesh, a new movement is being seen in the sports world also. Aminul Haq, who became Minister of State for Youth and Sports in the new BNP-led government, has hinted that the way could be cleared for the return of veteran cricketers Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza to Bangladesh cricket. The new government has been formed after a massive victory in the general elections held on 12 February. Aminul Haq, who was once the captain of Bangladesh football team, during the press conference in Mirpur talked about resolving the issues related to both the players soon.
Many cases are registered against Shakib-Mortaza
Both Shakib and Mortaza were MPs during the Awami League government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The situation changed after widespread protests against the government in August 2024 and several serious cases including murder were registered against both the players. After the formation of the new government, Aminul Haq said, ‘The government will look into the matter related to Shakib and Mortaza. We will take a flexible approach on this issue. The government will handle the cases registered against them. We want Shakib to make a comeback. He further said, ‘Since there are cases registered against him, we hope that they will be resolved soon so that he can return to the game. We want Shakib and Mortaza to be seen again in Bangladesh cricket. Shakib is currently an active player, while Mortaza has retired. However, being a veteran of Bangladesh cricket, Mashrafe can play a big role as a coaching staff or selector.
The previous government’s stance was different
During the interim government in September 2025, sports advisor Asif Mahmood Shojib Bhuiyan had clearly stated that Shakib would not be allowed to represent the national team. The political circumstances were different at that time. Shakib has been out of the national team for the last one and a half years, although he has been active in T20 franchise leagues around the world. His last international match was the Kanpur Test against India in late 2024. Whereas 42-year-old Mortaza was playing regularly in domestic cricket before the 2024 movement.
Initiative to improve relations with India
Aminul Haq also talked about improving sports relations with India. He said, ‘As soon as I assumed charge, I met the Deputy High Commissioner of India and discussed the resolution of the issues through friendly talks. We want to maintain good relations with neighboring countries and resolve sports matters through diplomatic dialogue. Necessary steps will be taken as per ICC rules in cricket. This statement indicates that the new government is trying to keep sports away from political tension.
What will be the return?
Now all eyes are on what will be the outcome of the legal cases. If the charges are dropped, Bangladesh Cricket may get the services of its two experienced players again. Both Shakib and Mortaza have been among the biggest faces of Bangladesh cricket. In such a situation, his possible return can prove to be a morale booster for the team.
