New Delhi. Amidst the continuously worsening situation and violent protests in Iran, many Indian citizens stranded there have returned home safely. A large number of students are among these citizens who reached Delhi from Iran late on Friday night. Upon returning to India, these citizens appreciated the efforts of the Government of India and the Indian Embassy.
It is being told in media reports that currently about 10 thousand Indian citizens are present in Iran, which includes students, businessmen and various professionals. Of these, about 2500 to 3000 students have gone to Iran for medical studies. After the situation worsened, the Indian government took proactive measures regarding their safety and even announced airlift if necessary.
An Indian citizen who returned from Iran said that the situation there had become very bad. The Indian government is being very cooperative and the Indian Embassy was in constant touch, he said. We were advised to leave Iran as soon as possible. If Modi is there then everything is possible.
One such medical student told the media that the Indian Embassy had contacted him, although he has reached Delhi on his own arrangements through a private flight. He said that considering the situation, returning to India was the safest option. Other citizens returning from Iran have described the situation there as horrific. One such citizen said, we were there for about a month, but in the last one-two weeks the situation has worsened. When we went out, the protesters would come in front of the car and harass us. Many times an atmosphere of fear was created. He also said that he was unable to contact his family and the embassy due to internet services being shut down. Another Indian said that the protests in Iran had become extremely dangerous. Meanwhile, the Government of India has made great efforts and has brought back the students safely.
It is noteworthy that protests started in Iran from December 28, 2025, against inflation and the historic fall of the Iranian currency Rial. This movement gradually spread to all the 31 provinces of the country. At present, the Government of India is monitoring the situation of the remaining Indian citizens present in Iran and is prepared to provide further assistance if needed.
