After India’s historic victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, former England captain Michael Vaughan has given a statement which many people are considering against the decorum of cricket. Vaughan said that South Africa had acted foolishly because if they had lost to the West Indies, India would not have been able to reach the semi-finals.

Vaughan called South Africa the most stupid team

Speaking in a cricket podcast, Michael Vaughan said that the South African team made the biggest mistake in the tournament. He said, ‘Let me tell you, who was the stupidest team of the tournament – South Africa. If they had allowed West Indies to win in the Super-8, India would have been out. According to Vaughan, if South Africa had lost that match, the West Indies team would have reached the semi-finals and India’s campaign would have ended there.

‘It is important to eliminate the best team’

Vaughan further said in his statement that to win any tournament, it is necessary to eliminate the strongest team. He said, ‘If they had excluded India, the wave that was going on would have stopped. The best way to stop the best team in the tournament from winning the T20 World Cup was to eliminate them. South Africa missed that opportunity. Vaughan also said that after South Africa’s victory, India’s confidence increased further and the team won the title by winning consecutive matches. Vaughan said, ‘By defeating West Indies, South Africa allowed the Indian team’s winning streak to continue. India then beat Zimbabwe, then West Indies in a quarter-final of sorts, and then England in the semi-finals.’

Such thinking is against ICC rules

However, this statement of Vaughan is being considered quite controversial, because a team deliberately losing a match is completely against the rules of cricket and the spirit of the game. According to ICC’s anti-corruption rules, if any team or player is proven guilty of deliberately losing a match or fixing, then there is a provision for strict punishment. In such cases, players can also be banned for a long time.

India created history

Meanwhile, the Indian team performed brilliantly and won the title of T20 World Cup 2026. India won the trophy by defeating New Zealand in the final. With this, India became the champion team for the third time in T20 World Cup history and also became the first team to achieve this feat on its home ground.
