
Sivagangai (Tamil Nadu): Tension has spread in Manamadurai in Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu after a remand prisoner died during treatment. His family alleges that the police tortured him during interrogation.
The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Akash Delison. Police said he was arrested for his involvement in a recent assault case in the area. Akash and others were allegedly involved in the attack on Jaikumar of Jeevan Nagar and Azhagar of Adhanur.
It is reported that a few days ago the assailants had attacked both of them with weapons near the Railway Colony area in Manamadurai. After the incident, Manamadurai police registered a case and arrested Akash and another suspect. Police said that to avoid arrest, Akash jumped from the Melapasalai overbridge and suffered a fracture in his leg.
He was initially treated at Manamadurai Government Hospital and later shifted to Sivagangai Government Medical College Hospital, from where he was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai for further treatment.
Police said that during treatment, he suddenly started having difficulty breathing late at night and despite treatment, he died. However, Akash’s family alleged that he died after being tortured in custody by the Manamadurai police during interrogation. Henry Tiffagne, lawyer of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, said that the Madras High Court should take cognizance of this matter itself.
On his He further said, “The youth was taken on remand on 7 March 2026, and he died this morning (8 March 2026) at Madurai Government Medical College Hospital.”
JAAT demands that the postmortem should be conducted as per the guidelines of the judgment “Santosh vs. District Collector Madurai” and the High Court itself should take cognizance of the matter.
