Hair fall and graying of hair were considered a symptom of aging till a few decades ago, however now these problems are increasing in younger people also. Not only this, many people under the age of 20 are seen suffering from the problem of gray hair or baldness. Health experts say that people’s poor lifestyle, lack of nutrients in the diet, increasing stress have increased hair problems more than before. Genetics is considered a major reason for hair loss, which means if your father has had the problem of hair fall or baldness, then the risk of it in children is higher. Not only men but women are also seen suffering from hair fall. Hair related problems occur in women due to PCOS, thyroid problems and lack of nutrition. Apart from lifestyle and heredity, researchers in the study have also blamed gut health i.e. problems related to intestines for hair fall. Meaning, if your digestion is disturbed then hair can fall due to this also. Let us understand this connection.

Connection between gut health and hair fall

Health experts say that thinning and weakening of hair, receding hairline and other related problems are becoming increasingly common among people of all genders. When it comes to men, this problem is noticed even more. But do you know that hair fall is not just a cosmetic problem, your poor digestion can also be responsible for it. To understand the connection between poor gut health and hair fall, a private hair treatment company conducted a survey. The company analyzed health data of more than 1.6 lakh men from December 2024 to December 2025 from ten regions of India – Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Telangana, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Indicators of gut health problems of the participants such as constipation and upset stomach were also taken into consideration. It was found that men whose gut health was disturbed had a higher risk of hair loss than others.

What was revealed in the survey?

The report found that fewer men reported better gut health in 2025 than in 2024. Experts considered this a national trend, seen more in India’s largest urban and economically active states. Thousands of men reported digestive problems and symptoms of chronic stomach conditions. Importantly, this trend is not linked to rural areas or malnutrition. Rather, it is most common in urban, educated and economically active areas of India. This suggests that modern lifestyle patterns are a major factor.

Why does hair become weak due to intestinal problems?

Researchers said, problems in absorption of nutrients are seen in people whose gut health is not good, which is an important reason for hair loss. The intestines absorb protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B from food, which are necessary to keep the hair follicles strong. Hair fibers are made up of approximately 90% keratin, a protein made of amino acids. Due to disturbance in the microbiome, if the intestine does not function properly, then these nutrients do not reach the hair follicles in the right quantity. The result is that hair becomes structurally weak and begins to fall out rapidly. Additionally, gut weakness can cause inflammation throughout the body, which disrupts the hair growth cycle.

How to stop hair fall?

To prevent hair fall, it is first important to correct lifestyle and eating habits. Hair is mainly made of keratin protein, so it is important to consume protein-rich food like pulses, eggs, milk, cheese, soybean and nuts. Apart from this, iron, biotin, vitamin D and zinc are considered important for the strength of hair. It is also important to reduce stress, because chronic stress can increase hair fall. Stress can be reduced by yoga, meditation and regular exercise. If hair fall is becoming excessive, it is important to consult a dermatologist in time. The risk of baldness can be reduced with timely medicines or medical treatment.
