This situation has arisen when on the request of BCCI, IPL franchise KKR released Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from its squad. After that Bangladesh announced not to come to India for the T20 World Cup citing ‘security concerns’. It has demanded ICC to move its World Cup matches out of India. However, according to reports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has told BCB that it will have to come to India and play the World Cup otherwise it will have to lose match points. Now BCB claims that it is in talks with ICC regarding Bangladesh’s participation in the World Cup. BCB said in a statement issued on Wednesday, ‘The Board has received the ICC’s response to the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s concerns regarding the Bangladesh national team playing the ICC T20 World Cup in India and the team’s request to shift the matches to another venue. In its response, the ICC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring Bangladesh’s full and uninterrupted participation in the T20 World Cup. The statement further said, ‘The ICC has expressed its desire to work closely with the BCB to address the concerns raised by it. He assured that the Board’s input will be welcomed and will be considered in the detailed security planning of the event.
ICC has not given any public response to BCB on this issue. The T20 World Cup is starting from 7th February and Bangladesh has to play 4 matches in Kolkata and Mumbai.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board also said it is confident that an ‘amicable and workable solution’ will be found for its team’s ‘smooth and successful’ participation in the T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh team, included in Group C, has to face West Indies in its first match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After that, it will play matches in India against England, Italy and Nepal. The BCB also rejected reports that the ICC has asked it to either play as per the schedule or be prepared to lose points for its matches in India. The statement said, “The BCB has also taken cognizance of some reports published in the media stating that an ultimatum has been issued to the Board in this regard. BCB clarifies that such claims are completely untrue and baseless. Mustafizur was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 9.2 crore in the player auction held in Abu Dhabi last year. After being out of the IPL, Mustafizur was included in the Pakistan Super League on Tuesday, although the players have not been selected for this tournament yet.
