During the tenure of Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir, there has been a decline in the team’s performance in Test and ODI. It was during his tenure in Test cricket that first New Zealand defeated India in the home series and later South Africa. In both the series, India could not even win a single test on its own soil, let alone draw it. Similarly, New Zealand’s less experienced team defeated India in its own home in the ODI series. However, during the tenure of Gautam Gambhir, the team is showing success in T20 International. In such a situation, there is often speculation that Gautam Gambhir may be retired from red ball cricket, that is, there will be a separate coach for the Test format and Gambhir can continue coaching in limited overs cricket. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has taken a dig at these speculations. In an interview given to Sportstar, Saikia said that people are free for their personal opinion but BCCI has qualified people to take decisions on these issues.
Who advised Gautam Gambhir to stay away from social media and why?
‘140 crore country and all cricket experts’
Saikia said, ‘India is a country of 140 crore people and everyone is a cricket expert. Everyone will have an opinion. This is a democratic country and we cannot impose restrictions on anyone. All opinion makers are free to express their opinions, including the media. There are a lot of news based on speculations and many former cricketers, cricketers or other people are also giving their opinion. There is a lot of it on social media.
‘We have capable people to take decisions’
The BCCI Secretary further said, ‘But the thing is that we have a cricket committee in BCCI which consists of former cricketers. They are dedicated and take all decisions. On the other hand, we have 5 selectors for team selection. They are also capable of taking a decision on this. They think about such things. There is an opposite opinion regarding every decision. Therefore we have to consider those opinions. But the final decision is always taken by the cricket committee and also the selectors.
