Tehran: Iran on Saturday urged people to evacuate the Middle East’s busiest port and two other ports in the United Arab Emirates. It was the first time it openly threatened non-US assets of a neighboring country, as its war with the US and Israel enters its third week. Tehran said that the US attacked Kharg Island using ports and bases in the UAE without providing any evidence. The main terminal handling Iran’s oil exports is located on Kharg Island. He urged people to leave areas where he said American forces were holed up. During this war, Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones at its neighboring countries in the Arabian Gulf region. However, it says that it is targeting only American assets, while there have been reports of attacks or attempted attacks on civilian assets like airports and oil fields. US President Donald Trump said the country has completely destroyed military bases on Kharg Island and if Tehran continues to interfere with the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, the oil infrastructure could be the next target. Amid growing concerns around the world about oil prices and supplies, Trump said on Saturday that he expected China, France, Japan, South Korea, Britain and other countries to send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and safe. In response, Britain said that it is discussing several options with allies to ensure the safety of ships. Israel said its air force struck more than 200 targets in the past 24 hours, including missile launchers, defense systems and weapons manufacturing sites. Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon deepened. Israel’s sustained attacks against Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters killed more than 800 people and left 850,000 homeless. A US official said 2,500 more Marines from the US 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli are being sent to the Middle East. This is the largest military deployment of warships and aircraft in the region in decades.
