Angered by the expulsion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, Bangladesh is demanding to change the venue of the T20 World Cup matches starting in India from next month. He is saying that his team will not play matches in India due to ‘security concerns’ and hence ICC, the highest administrative body of cricket, should shift its matches out of India. Since Sri Lanka is also the co-host of the World Cup, Bangladesh is trying to shift its matches there. Seeing that they are not getting the desired response from the ICC, now Bangladesh is saying that they will not play the World Cup at the cost of humiliation. Well, this has happened many times before when a team has refused to play at a particular venue in an ICC tournament.
New Zealand did not play World Cup match in Kenya
In 2003, the ODI World Cup was jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Then New Zealand refused to play in Kenya due to security reasons. He asked ICC to shift his match to Nairobi but his demand was rejected. The result was that Kenya got a walkover. New Zealand had to lose points. In the 2003 World Cup itself, England had refused to play Zimbabwe in Harare. The reason was that there was a lot of bitterness in the relations between the then Zimbabwean government led by Robert Mugabe and the British government. England had asked the ICC to shift their match to be held in Harare out of Zimbabwe but this demand was rejected. When England did not turn up to play the match, Zimbabwe got a walkover. The loss of points was very heavy for England and the team was eliminated in the first round of the World Cup.
Zimbabwe withdrew its team from the 2009 T20 World Cup.
The 2009 T20 World Cup took place in England. The bitterness in the relations between Zimbabwe and England was still continuing. Then Zimbabwe withdrew its team from the World Cup after negotiating with the ICC because Britain does not give visas to their players. Under the agreement, Zimbabwe received the full fee from the ICC and in its place Scotland got the chance to play in the World Cup.
Australia and West Indies did not play matches in Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup.
Australia and West Indies refused to play in Sri Lanka in the 1996 ODI World Cup. There was unrest in Sri Lanka at that time and LTTE activities were at their peak. The 1996 World Cup was jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Australia and West Indies did not travel to Sri Lanka for their group matches and had to lose points. Coincidentally, that time Sri Lanka won the World Cup.
