New Delhi. During the hearing on Aravalli hills in the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Surya Kant said that despite the ban, illegal mining is going on. This will create situations which cannot be improved. The bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi said that it will form an expert committee of experts to stop mining. The court took a guarantee from the Rajasthan government that no mining would be allowed in the Aravalli region.
During the hearing, the bench said – the interim order issued earlier will continue. CJI said- Some types of illegal activities are still going on. Illegal mining can create situations that cannot be improved. Do not file new writ petitions. We know why these petitions are being filed.
On this, senior advocate Kapil Sibal (on behalf of the intervener) said that we know the history of Aravali. There should be science behind its definition. On this the CJI said- We need experts from different fields. Everyone suggest names. We will form a team of experts in a phased manner.
Kapil Sibal appealed that please have a preliminary hearing of 30 minutes. Mountain ranges like Himalaya and Aravali cannot be defined. Tectonic movements keep happening in these. Another lawyer said- We welcome the suo moto order of the court. We have worked with farmers at the grassroots level, and also done geo-tagging.
On this, the CJI said that in the context of the order of December 29, 2025, a comprehensive note and important questions will be placed before the court, so that the right decision can be taken. CJI said- On behalf of Rajasthan government, K.M. Natarajan has said that the state will immediately ensure that there is no illegal mining in the state. He said- The interim application filed by Kapil Sibal is approved.
