Gig Workers Protest: Today and Saturday, gig workers running Ola, Uber and Rapido are going on strike across the country. Drivers associated with ride-hailing platforms have decided to remain logged out of the app for 6 hours. In such a situation, the biggest problem may be faced by those people who use these platforms to travel anywhere in the city. What ultimately happened that the gig workers have decided to go on strike and what demands they have made, know here.
Cab and taxi services may be affected in many cities across the country due to the strike of gig workers. The union believes that the earnings of drivers are continuously decreasing and the stability of income is increasing. Which is affecting livelihood. In view of this, Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has called a strike. The union has placed its two demands before the companies.
What are the demands?
- Founder President of Telangana GIG and Platform Workers Union said that we have 2 demands from the Central Transport Department. Recently, such a provision has been made in the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025, according to which even private vehicles without commercial number plates have been allowed to drive, which is against the interests of the drivers. The union opposes this.
- Regarding the second demand, the Speaker said that the companies decide the fare as per their own, due to which both drivers and passengers suffer losses. The union demands that its authority should rest only with the government, so that it can take decisions keeping in mind the drivers and passengers. If the government decides the fare, both will benefit. The union has decided to go on strike across the country regarding these two demands.
Economic survey report also shows concern about gig workers
Let us tell you, recently the report of Economic Survey 2025-26 has come, in which concern has been expressed about gig workers. The report said that the gig economy is growing but income stability has also emerged as a big problem. That means the salary of about 40 percent gig workers is less than Rs 15,000. If you also use Ola, Uber and Rapido to travel anywhere in the city, then definitely check the situation before traveling on Saturday or make alternative arrangements in advance.
