
Know when are the elections in West Bengal
Voting will start on 9th April in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry and 23rd April in Tamil Nadu.
New Delhi. The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the dates of assembly elections of five states. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar told in a press conference held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi that assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal will be held in April, while the counting of votes will be done on May 4, 2026.
As per the election schedule announced by the Election Commission, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will go to polls in a single phase on April 9, while Tamil Nadu will go to polls on April 23. Whereas in West Bengal, elections will be held in two phases, the first phase will be held on 23 April while the second phase will be held on 29 April. Election results of all states will be declared on May 4.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that a total of 17.4 crore voters will exercise their franchise in these five states and union territories. About 2.19 lakh polling stations have been set up for the elections and voting will be conducted on a total of 824 assembly seats through about 25 lakh EVM machines. He said that the Election Commission had recently visited all the election states to review the preparations for the elections. During this, the Commission met representatives of various political parties, district election officers, police officers and nodal officers of enforcement agencies and took suggestions. Apart from this, meetings were also held with Chief Secretaries, Director Generals of Police and Chief Electoral Officers of the respective states.
Special arrangements to prevent fake and misinformation
This time the Election Commission has also issued special guidelines to stop fake news and misinformation on social media. The Commission says that strict steps will be taken to keep the election process fair and transparent.
Model code of conduct implemented
With the announcement of elections, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in these states. Under this, governments will not be able to announce new schemes or start major development works. These elections are considered very important from political point of view. Currently, Trinamool Congress is in power in West Bengal, Dravida Munnetrakanham in Tamil Nadu, Left Democratic Front in Kerala, Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam and All India NR Congress-BJP alliance is in power in Puducherry.
