New Delhi. Batsman Sanju Samson, who was the Player of the Tournament after his brilliant performance in the T20 World Cup, has said that he was disappointed at not getting a place in the team in the initial phase. Samson said that he had decided that whenever he gets the opportunity, he will play as per the need of the team. That’s why he was successful. This also helped him in securing a place in the final round. This batsman said, ‘I prefer to do good for others rather than performing well for myself. I wanted to compete with my own teammates for a place in the team, which I was not liking at all.
He said, ‘I was very restless because I knew that my dream was very close now. But the team was trying different combinations, so things like whether I would get a place or not were on my mind. Sanju said, ‘I was completely heartbroken because my dream was to win the World Cup but I could not make it to the final round. So I went away from everyone for five-six days and started controlling myself again.
He said, ‘I started preparing myself, knowing that the chances of getting an opportunity to play were very slim.’ Although he did not score many runs in the Super Eight match against Zimbabwe, the management kept him in the team. Samson said, ‘I knew that the team management had faith in me. Right from the Zimbabwe match, we had to win four out of four and the team needed me. From then on, things went in the right direction for me and I became excited. This batsman said, ‘From the day I started playing cricket, I had only one dream to play for the country and I was successful in it. Also said that when you play for the country, the biggest dream is to win the ICC trophy for your country.
He said, ‘The start was not what I wanted, but still I was happy because the team was doing well and we were winning matches.’ He said, ‘My dream was to become world champion one day. It is not just about one trophy, but it is about how many trophies I can win for my country. I play with this mindset.
